The purpose of a commitment ceremony is
to provide a mechanism for those couples wishing to be married,
who don't want the hassle of completing the legal paperwork required
by the Australian Marriage Act 1961.
Commitment Ceremonies also offer the ability
for gay, lesbian and transgender couples to be married, although
the marriage is not legally binding. The reason for this is that
the Australian Marriage Act 1961 does not recognise same sex marriages.
Tim has a Commitment
Ceremony Web Site that offers more detail about the exchanging
of vows, traditional rituals, readings, music and commitment ceremony
ideas and locations.
